The MOM behind
the mother’s Room
Hi, I’m Saedi Burke.
I started this project after being haunted by photos of pumping rooms in my local moms chat.
(And honestly, maybe those rooms are haunted too.)
When I started thinking about why I couldn’t stop thinking about these rooms, it opened up a whole tangled world.
How does it feel and what does it mean to be a “working mom”? And why don’t we have better language to talk about moms in the workplace? (As one smart mom pointed out, no one ever talks about “working dads”.)
The intent, in treating these stories and photographs like an art show (image and placard), is to do just that. With enough responses, I’d love to take this project beyond the digital space and create a gallery show displaying the work. (With a few actual pumps treated as art objects for good measure.)
I hope this project is a place to explore the complicated feelings that arise from being both an employee and parent. And for all of us to re-examine the spaces we create for moms, both in the workplace, and out in the world.
